Privacy Policy
Spillsy turns your speech into text on your Mac. It collects no data: what you say, what it writes and everything you save stay on your Mac, and the app never connects to the internet.
Effective October 29, 2026. Covers the Spillsy app for Mac and this website.
Who we are
Spillsy is made by heydaytime (“we”, “us”). Questions about this policy go to support@spillsy.com.
Data we collect
None. Spillsy has no account, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no crash reporting of its own. We don’t receive your recordings, your text, your settings or anything about how you use the app, and we don’t sell or share data with anyone, because we don’t have any.
The Mac App Store version is sandboxed by Apple without permission to use the network, so it cannot send data anywhere. Its speech and cleanup models, Spillsy Speech and Spillsy Polish, are built into the app and run on your Mac.
How Spillsy processes what you say
When you dictate, Spillsy records your microphone, turns the audio into text with Spillsy Speech on your Mac’s Neural Engine, and cleans the text up with Spillsy Polish on your Mac’s GPU. It then pastes the text into the app you’re typing in and restores what was on your clipboard. None of this leaves your Mac.
Apple Intelligence
Transforms, Command Mode and Notetaker’s meeting titles and summaries use Apple’s Foundation Models framework, which runs Apple’s language model on your Mac. Spillsy uses only that on-device model; it doesn’t send text to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute or to any other service. These features need Apple Intelligence turned on in System Settings, and Apple’s handling of Apple Intelligence is described in Apple’s privacy policy.
Permissions
macOS asks you before Spillsy can use each of these. You can turn any of them off in System Settings › Privacy & Security; only the features that need it stop working.
- Microphone: to hear you while you hold the dictation key or dictate hands-free, and to record your side of a meeting in Notetaker. Spillsy doesn’t listen at any other time.
- Input Monitoring: to notice when you press fn and your other Spillsy shortcuts, including mouse-button shortcuts. Spillsy only watches for its own shortcuts; it doesn’t record or store what you type.
- Accessibility: to post the keystrokes that paste your text at the cursor (⌘V), and that copy selected text (⌘C) when you use Command Mode or a Transform. In the Mac App Store version, that’s all it’s used for. Spillsy is also offered as a direct download from us; that version additionally uses Accessibility to read a little of the text around your cursor, on your Mac, so names in the conversation are spelled right and words you correct can be added to your dictionary. That text isn’t stored or sent anywhere, and you can turn this off in Settings › Data and Privacy.
- System Audio Recording: for Notetaker only. When you start a recording you choose whose audio to include as the other side of the call: one app (such as Zoom or a browser), everything your Mac plays, or nothing. Spillsy records that audio only while Notetaker is recording.
- Calendar: to show today’s events in Notetaker. macOS asks for full calendar access, but Spillsy only reads the title and times of today’s events, never changes your calendar, and doesn’t keep copies of your events.
- Automation (Apple Events): to pause Music or Spotify while you dictate and resume it after, only if you turn that on in Settings. Spillsy sends those apps play and pause commands and nothing else.
What Spillsy stores on your Mac
Spillsy keeps the following on your Mac, inside its sandbox container at ~/Library/Containers/dev.heydaytime.spillsy:
- Dictation history: what you said, what Spillsy typed, the app you dictated into and when. You choose how long it’s kept.
- Audio recordings: the audio of each dictation and meeting, kept so you can replay, retry or export them, while “Keep audio recordings” is on in Settings › Data and Privacy. Turn it off and new audio isn’t kept.
- Your dictionary, snippets and Transforms, as you set them up.
- Scratchpad notes and Notetaker meetings: transcripts, titles, summaries and, if kept, their audio.
- Settings and usage statistics such as word counts, speed and streaks, which Spillsy works out from your history to show in Insights.
This data isn’t synced through iCloud. Like other files on your Mac, it’s included in your own backups, such as Time Machine, if you make them.
Deleting your data
- Retention: in Settings › Data and Privacy, choose to keep dictation history forever, for 30 days or for 7 days, or not at all. Older dictations and their audio are deleted daily. Choosing not to keep history deletes it right away.
- Everything at once: “Delete dictation history” in the same place removes every dictation and its audio. Meetings, notes, your dictionary and snippets stay until you delete them.
- One item at a time: delete any dictation, meeting, note, dictionary entry, snippet or Transform in the app.
- Removing Spillsy: move Spillsy from Applications to the Trash, then delete the folder
~/Library/Containers/dev.heydaytime.spillsyto remove all of its data. Settings › Data and Privacy › Show in Finder opens that data folder.
Purchases
Spillsy is sold through the Mac App Store. Apple handles payment and gives us sales reports that don’t identify you. If you choose to share analytics with app developers in your Mac’s settings, Apple may also give us crash reports and aggregated usage figures, under Apple’s privacy policy.
This website
This site sets no cookies and has no analytics, advertising or third-party scripts. The service that hosts it may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses and the pages requested, to deliver and secure the site; we don’t use them to identify you. The Mac App Store link takes you to Apple, whose privacy policy applies there.
Support email
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach, and use them only to answer you. Spillsy never sends us your history or recordings; please don’t attach recordings unless we ask and you’re comfortable sharing them. Ask us to delete your correspondence at any time.
Children
Spillsy isn’t directed at children under 13, and it collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If Spillsy’s handling of data changes, we’ll update this page and the effective date above before the change reaches the app. See also the Terms of Use.
