How to set up Spillsy, and what to do when something doesn’t work.

Setting up

Spillsy needs a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later. When you first open it, it walks you through the permissions it needs. You can also allow them yourself in System Settings › Privacy & Security:

Then hold fn in any text field, speak, and let go. Double-tap fn to dictate hands-free, and press Esc to cancel. You can change the shortcut in Settings.

Getting ready after installing or updating

The first time Spillsy opens after you install or update it, macOS prepares the speech model for your Mac’s Neural Engine. Spillsy shows that it’s getting ready, which takes up to about 10 minutes. You only wait once per install or update; after that, Spillsy starts in seconds. Nothing is downloaded: the models are already inside the app.

Questions

Does Spillsy send my voice anywhere?

No. Spillsy Speech and Spillsy Polish run on your Mac and ship inside the app, and Spillsy never goes online. There’s no account and nothing is collected.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Everything works without an internet connection, from the first launch.

Which apps does it work in?

Any app where you can type: Mail, Messages, Slack, Notes, browsers, code editors and more. Spillsy pastes at your cursor and then puts your clipboard back.

What do I need?

A Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later. Dictation is English only. Transforms, Command Mode and meeting summaries also need Apple Intelligence turned on; dictation and cleanup don’t.

Why does the first launch take a few minutes?

After you install or update Spillsy, macOS prepares the speech model for your Mac’s Neural Engine. It takes up to about 10 minutes, happens once, and dictation starts as soon as it’s done. Later launches take seconds.

Can I use a key other than fn?

Yes. Choose another key, fn with ⌃, ⌥, ⇧ or ⌘, or a mouse button in Settings. Double-tap fn to dictate hands-free, and press Esc to cancel.

How do I get names and jargon right?

Add them to your Dictionary once. Spillsy spells them your way in every dictation and meeting note, and replacements turn what you say into what you want, like “Q four” into Q4.

Is there a subscription?

No. Spillsy is a one-time purchase of $2.99 on the Mac App Store.

Troubleshooting

Holding fn does nothing

Spillsy needs Input Monitoring to notice fn. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Input Monitoring and turn on Spillsy. If it’s already on, turn it off and on again, then quit and reopen Spillsy. If fn opens the emoji picker or switches input sources instead, set “Press 🌐 key to” to Do Nothing in System Settings › Keyboard.

The Flow Bar shows my words, but nothing is pasted

Spillsy needs Accessibility to paste. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility and turn on Spillsy. Make sure your cursor is in a text field when you let go of fn. If something was missed, the text is still in Home, where you can copy it.

Spillsy says it’s getting ready

After you install or update Spillsy, macOS prepares the speech model for your Mac’s Neural Engine. This happens once and takes up to about 10 minutes, longer if your Mac is busy. Keep Spillsy open; dictation starts as soon as it’s done, and later launches take seconds.

No mic audio

Check System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and turn on Spillsy. If you use more than one microphone, choose the one you want in Spillsy’s Settings, and check that it isn’t muted.

Notetaker only hears me, not the other side

macOS has to allow Spillsy to record other apps’ audio. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording and turn on Spillsy under System Audio Recording Only, then record again. macOS doesn’t tell apps whether this is on, so Notetaker warns you when the app you chose is playing but only silence arrives. Also check that you chose the right app, or All Mac audio, when you started recording.

Notetaker doesn’t show my meetings

Allow Spillsy in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Calendars. Notetaker shows today’s events from the calendars on your Mac, including accounts you’ve added in the Calendar app.

Transforms, Command Mode or summaries don’t work

These use Apple Intelligence. Turn it on in System Settings › Apple Intelligence & Siri and wait for it to finish downloading. Dictation and cleanup don’t need it. For Transforms and Command Mode, select the text first; Spillsy copies the selection, rewrites it and pastes the result over it.

A name or word keeps coming out wrong

Add it to the Dictionary, with the spelling you want. To turn one phrase into another, such as “Q four” into Q4, add a replacement.

The text sounds too formal or too casual

Open Style and choose Formal, Casual, very casual or Excited for each kind of app: personal messages, work messages, email and other. You can move apps between groups.

I can’t find the Flow Bar

It sits at the centre of a screen edge as a small capsule and grows when you hover over it. Drag it to any edge of any display; glass outlines show where it can land.

Your data

Everything Spillsy keeps stays on your Mac. Settings › Data and Privacy lets you choose how long history is kept, whether audio is kept, and delete your history. The Privacy Policy has the details.

Email support@spillsy.com. Tell us your Mac model, your macOS version, the app you were dictating into, and what happened. Spillsy never sends us anything on its own, so we only see what you include. Please don’t send recordings unless we ask.
